Site News and Updates 2011
It has been some time since we have provided an overview of updates and changes to the site. This recap will cover both changes to site functions and major cemetery visits / updates.
One function that should help in finding all the relatives in a particular cemetery was added to the Cemetery Description page. If through burial search you find the individual you're searching for, take note of the cemetery. Navigate to the Cemetery Description page, go to the Detail page for that cemetery. There you will have the option to View/Search burials in just that cemetery. You may want to do two searches: one for Surname and a second for Maidenname. Note that generally we will only have the maiden name if it actually appears on the stone. For some cemeteries such as Brookside Cemetery, you can restrict your search to a particular section of the cemetery.
Cemetery Specific: If "Search / View Burials" is selected from any of the Cemetery pages, you can restrict the search to that particular cemetery. There is also an option to remove that restriction and have the search look at all the entries in the Burials Collection. The View All Burials that was originally on the Cemetery pages has been moved to the Burial Search page. While this adds an extra step to view all burials in small cemeteries, this move was necessary to implement the added options/features, as well as, laying the foundation for future options.
Cemetery Sections: For select cemeteries (currently only Brookside Cemetery, Town of Watertown, Lakeside Cemetery and Sulphur Springs Cemetery, Town of Hounsfield), there is a Section Matrix at the bottom of the page. This matrix permits the browsing of all burials in a specific section of the cemetery. Additional cemeteries will have this option available as section information is refined. Unfortunately for most cemeteries either sections don't exist or we don't have accurate cemetery maps to determine section boundaries.
The Burial Search function has been enhanced in two new features:
Surname option: While it's always been possible to search by just a portion of a surname, it wasn't nearly as flexible as it should have been. With this update there are now three ways to taylor how the search looks at surnames.
1) Sounds Like (Soundex): This option will return all surnames with a similar sound. As the first implementation of this feature, it's not quite as fast as we would like; however, there are no known major issues. While it doesn't appear to miss any similar sounding names, some of those returned appear to be a questionable fit.
2) Begins With: This is the basic function that is in all of the searches on the site. It returns all surnames that begin with the letters entered in the surname search box and is the default setting.
3) Exact: Returns only those names that are an exact match to what is entered in the surname box.
Year of Death: This option was added to permit restricting the listing to specific date ranges. Years can be represented by 2, 3 or 4 digits. For example if you enter 180, it will return only those burials that fall within the range of 1800 to 1809. The only quirk with this option is that it will not return dates that have unreadable gaps in the year of death. If the search is for 180, it will not return a year of death of 18?9; however it will return a year of death of 180?. We're currently exploring the possibility of implementing a true range of dates option.
Burial / Cemetery updates
Thirty-three cemeteries were visited during the 2011 season. The following is a recap of those visits.
|Adams State Road Cemetery||Visits to this cemetery were made in conjunction with association events. Those opportunities were used to resolve issues with prior readings. All updates have been posted to the site.|
|Bachelor Cemetery||One of our ongoing efforts is to determine the status of lost/destroyed cemeteries. Bachelor is essentially destroyed. The only identifiable stone fragment was for Delilah Bachelor. It's possible more exist and requires a revisit to determine if other stones exist.|
|Barnes Bay Cemetery||A revisit was made to see the extent of the restoration work that was evident in 2006. Apparently the restoration was abandoned as the cemetery is overgrown and more stones are down, partially buried, and/or broken.|
|Brookside Cemetery||All of the visits were in response to specific requests. We still have approximately 500 photos from several sections to work.|
|Brownville Cemetery||Several visits were made as we attempt to complete the inventory for this cemetery. Our inventory is now about 70% complete. We are indebted to the Town of Brownville for permitting us to copy the lot map for Brownville Cemetery and many of the small cemeteries located throughout the town. All of the photos have been read and updates posted.|
|Cedar Grove Cemetery||One section was photographed and the cemetery is now about 30% completed. Photos have been read and updates posted.|
|Champion Huddle Cemetery||A revisit to rephotograph some stones that were unreadable. Updates have been posted.|
|Clark Cemetery (Rutland)||Initial visit to this cemetery. All of the brush has been cleared and the cemetery is now easily accessible. A full inventory was conducted and updates posted.|
|Evergreen Cemetery||Work continues on Section 2 which is nearly complete. Updates posted.|
|Hewitt Farm Cemetery||Cemetery has been destroyed. There are two stones standing in roughly the area where the cemetery was supposedly located; however, neither name appears on prior readings. We're attempting to determine if the two stones were in Hewitt Farm or Bachelor Cemetery.|
|Hillside (Antwerp)||Photographed select stones throughout the cemetery in response to requests.|
|Jerusalem Road Cemetery||Initial visit to this cemetery. All the stones were photographed and updates have been posted. If you're going to visit this cemetery, we recommend that you either walk in or use a 4-wheel drive vehicle as the road is terrible at best.|
|Maple Hill Cemetery||Completely inventoried the cemetery. A revisit is required to clean some stones to obtain better readings. We still have not been able to identify 60 of the reported 642 burials in this cemetery. Updates have been posted.|
|Military Cemetery||A short visit to photograph stones placed since our previous visit. Updates posted.|
|North Adams Cemetery||Rephotographed all the stones in this cemetery. We still have not been able to positively identify 20 or the reported 88 burials. Updates posted.|
|Oakwood Cemetery||Select stones photographed in response to requests. Updates posted.|
|Old Town Cemetery||Visit was performed in conjunction with the visit to Hillside. Most of the work was done in areas where brush was recently removed uncovering more stones. Updates posted.|
|Point Salubrious Cemetery||Rephotographed all the stones. We currently can't positively identify 37 of the reported 174 burials in this cemetery. Updates posted.|
|Quaker Cemetery||A full photographic inventory was conducted. High grass and numerous broken and partially buried stones precluded identification of 50 of the reported 396 burials.|
|Saint Lawrence Union Cemetery||Select stones photographed in response to requests. Updates posted.|
|Saint Vincent of Paul Cemetery||Partial inventory in response to requests. Updates posted.|
|Sand Bay Cemetery||Select stones photographed to resolve issues with prior readings. Updates posted.|
|Sandy Hollow Cemetery||Select stone photographed in response to requests. Updates posted.|
|Three Mile Bay Cemetery||The eastern most section photographed. Photos have not been read.|
|Worthville Cemetery||A full photographic inventory was conducted. Review complete and site updated. We were unable to identify 28 of 272 burials reportedly buried in this cemetery.|
|Zoar Cemetery||Full photographic inventory conducted. Updates pending photo review.|
|Houseville Cemetery||Select stones photographed. Updates pending photo review.|
|Leyden Hill Cemetery||Select stones photographed. Updates pending photo review.|
|Liberty Cemetery||Full inventory conducted. Updates posted.|
|Locust Grove Cemetery||Select stones photographed. Updates pending photo review.|
|Martinsburg Cemetery||Select stones photographed. Updates pending photo review.|
